An ignition lock device (IID) is a device that prevents you from starting your car if you are drinking.
It is a small breathalyzer that installs in your car.
California uses the IID to reduce the number of recurring DUIs
The theory is that if a drunk convicted driver installs the device on their car, they are less likely to drink
and drive again—because the car won’t allow them to.
Not all drunk drivers are required for one installation, but many are.
IIDs are not convenient. If you’re asked to put one in your car,
you’ll find it expensive, frustrating, and hard to explain to others.
How does the ignition lock work?
A licensed Construction IID installer must have it installed by a professional.
You will have to obtain proof that it was installed and provide that proof to the Dubai.
ID requires multiple breath tests each time you drive:
One breath test to start the vehicle.
Do Construction a second breath test about 5-15 minutes after starting the vehicle.
This prevents you from hitting a sober friend with the device before you walk away from it.
Plus, random breath tests once every 45 minutes or so, as long as you keep driving.
The device will alert you each time it requires a new test.
You have about 6 minutes to take the test, or you will fail.
IIDs are designed to be tamper-resistant
The device can sense attempts to tamper with or remove wires.
She reports these attempts to the court.
Attempts to outsmart IID result in countless suspended licenses each year.
Installing IID will not harm your car.
You are caught in the wrong county
If your DUI occurred in Los Angeles, Alameda, Sacramento, or Tulare counties,
you will be required to obtain an IID no matter the reason.
This is part of the state’s “pilot program” to test whether IIDs reduce DUI rates.
In those counties, there are no exceptions – all DUIs require interlock devices.
The Waterproofing Construction judge orders it
Judges have wide discretion in how they judge you.
They can ask for an IID in almost any drunk-driving situation.
If it’s your DUI, the judge may not order one (except in the counties listed above).
However, a first-time DUI defendant with a blood alcohol level greater than 0.15% may be required to obtain an IID.
The same applies if your DUI hits anyone. Repeat offenders will likely be required to obtain an IID.
The Waterproofing Construction DMV requires it
- The DMV can also require an IID.
- If your DUI occurred while you were driving with a suspended or revoked license,
- or you do not have a license, you will be required to obtain an interlock device.
- Additionally, if you apply for restricted driving privileges,
- and this is your DUI (or more), you will need an interlock device.
Want to shorten your license suspension?
If this is your second or third DUI, you can shorten the license suspension period by voluntarily installing an IID.
This is not an option for first-time offenders because the suspension period is actually shorter for first-time DUIs.
You will not be eligible for an abbreviated suspension if your DUI includes drugs.
How long do I need an interlock device for a DUI in California?
If you are required to install an interlock, it is usually for a period of:
Five months for a first offense, or one year if a DUI hits someone
One year for the second violation
Two years for a third offense
Three years for the fourth or subsequent violation Construction.

Here is the process for obtaining an ignition lock device:
Pay for the vehicle and install IIDs on all your vehicles.
This does not apply to motorcycles or employer-owned vehicles.
Ask the installer for proof, and they should give you Form DL 920 (Installation Verification Form).
Make sure the form lists all the cars you brought in, not just one.
Submit the documents to your local DMV office.
If you are applying to have your driver’s license reinstated or restricted driving privileges,
you will need your SR Form 22 (Proof of DUI Vehicle Insurance).
If you have another license suspension on your record,
you won’t be approved until you take care of that, too.
How to avoid the ignition lock device
are some of the best ways to avoid a DUI conviction and, in turn, an ignition lock device:
Enter the pre-trial conversion program Construction.

if no one is injured or killed because of your alleged drunk driving,
which is a first-time offense.
However, you must be prepared to go through the requirements of the program.
Otherwise, the district attorney will likely continue to file DUI charges against you.
If you meet the requirements of the pretrial diversion program,
not only will you avoid the ignition lock device,
but your charges may be dismissed entirely or reduced to a less serious offense.
Waterproofing Construction Defend yourself in court
Another way to avoid an ignition lock device is to stand up for trial.
